Elephant Friendly Ivory
(ef Ivory)

Tagua Nutsef*ivory proudly presents the Tagua Nut, also called ivory nut or vegetable ivory. Tagua, (pronounced TAH-gwa) is a small nut grown on a palm tree in the rainforests of South America. Due to its close resemblance to animal ivory, it is hoped that this natural product will lessen the threat to the elephant from the ivory trade. (Click the links at the bottom to see and order what can be made from the Tagua Nut).

Tagua TreesThe advantage of the tagua nut is that it is a renewable resource, unlike the elephant. In a single year, a tagua palm tree can produce up to 20 pounds of nuts and continues to produce year after year. The nuts are harvested without harming the trees. Tagua trees are now preserved rather than destroyed with slash and burn farming techniques. Therefore, using tagua in this manner helps to conserve the endangered rainforests of South America's coastal plains.

Elephants in TanzaniaTagua products are all produced according to FAIR TRADE practices and encourage local economies. Your purchase helps protect elephants from the illegal ivory trade, fosters a respect for the rainforests, which are disappearing at an alarming rate. In many areas where the tagua palm tree flourishes, the harvest of the nuts to be used to make jewelry and sculptures creates employment opportunities, benefiting local families. This in turn, provides resourcesfor food, clothing, schooling, and housing and thus promotes social well-being.
